In this video, Chris describes how crucial it is to air-seal an attic if you have a whole house fan or want to get one installed.
Whole house fans suck cooler air from outside the house into the home and then exhaust it out through the attic vents. As you can imagine, this creates a vacuum-like effect throughout the house, and if there isn't sufficient ventilation in the attic to blow the hot air out (which there often isn't), the air travels through the gaps, cracks, and holes in your attic and blows into your home. This not only causes your home to heat up more than it would if it were air-sealed, but it can also force contaminants like mold, dirt, and even rat feces into your home's living spaces.
Whenever a customer wants a whole house fan, we always explain to them the importance of an attic restoration, which is where we remove the old insulation in the attic, clean and sanitize the attic, then air-seal it before installing the new insulation.
If your home is dusty, or if you or your family suffers from allergies, asthma, or other health conditions, it may be because of your attic!
