Krista contacted Tyson Energy Solutions because she believed her insulation was low. Her home was cold in the winters and hot in the summers, and she was becoming increasingly concerned about her heating and cooling bills. We came out to investigate and found that her attic only had about 5 inches of old, dirty insulation. We asked Krista if any of her family members had any health concerns and she told us that her two children had allergies. Because of all these factors, we decided that a complete attic restoration was in order.
We first removed all of the old, contaminated insulation from her attic. We then thoroughly cleaned and sanitized the attic using DSV sanitizer in order to eliminate contaminants and irritants that may have been contributing to her children's allergies. Next, we installed rodent-proof barriers to keep rodents and other pests out of the attic during the winter months and we sealed off other holes, gaps, and cracks using closed-cell foam. This included wire and plumbing penetrations, top plates, registers, and recessed lighting. This provides additional protection from air flowing between the attic and the home's living spaces. Lastly, we blew in premium, fiberglass insulation to a depth of 14 inches, bringing the home to the Energy Star-recommended R38 level of protection.
Because of our thorough work on Krista's attic restoration, she reports that not only is her home more comfortable temperature-wise, but she has seen a drastic reduction in her heating and cooling bills -- despite the rising cost of energy. Her children's allergies have also been virtually eliminated. They will be able to enjoy these benefits for as long as they live in the home.
Jared contacted us because his 1000-square-foot home was hot and uncomfortable. He was concerned that the summer months would become unbearable, not only temperature-wise but also in terms of his cooling costs. When we inspected his attic, we found that there was little to no insulation, maybe 1-2 inches, and there were numerous holes, goas, and cracks where hot attic air was able to flow into the living spaces of his home. Jacob reached out to us specifically to add insulation to what he already had in his attic. He had been in his attic and knew that his insulation level was low. When we inspected his attic, we agreed. He only had about 6 inches of insulation present, well below the Energy Star-recommended 14 inches. We came out and inspected his attic and found that his insulation was low, with only about 4-5 inches of old, cellulose insulation present. In addition, there were numerous holes, gaps, and cracks which was allowing air to flow between the attic and the rooms of the home. His vaulted ceiling was the main culprit. We also found multiple HVAC ducts that were broken and leaking conditioned air into the attic and contaminating the air in the living spaces of the home. We determined that a full attic restoration was needed, as well as repairing the broken ducts, and applying spray foam on the vaulted ceiling in order to insulate it and prevent air flow.
